Vess Camber has been about to send the demo for three years. They rent the third residence on the AFAR street — one console, one amp, and crates of records that mostly belong to other people — and work nights, remixing the same eleven songs until the differences are things only Vess can hear. Nothing has ever been mailed. Friends who have heard the room tapes describe quiet, close-mic'd songs with warm low ends and a voice that never rises above the level of someone talking to you from the next chair, printed to cassette with the hiss left in. Vess moved to town because the street never sleeps either; the envelope, addressed and unsealed, sits on top of the amp.
