I'm laying the floor now — whatever you drop, I will keep.
The Archivist: “The only take on the tape, and the one that sets the tempo-as-heartbeat approach she'd carry into later sessions.
LINER NOTES

From the back of the sleeve — the Archivist on what happened in the room.

This is a session with no other players and no committee waiting on the far end of it — just Delta Marlowe, alone, before any of the sessions that would come to define her started. There's nothing to react to, nothing to absorb, so she builds the space itself. Her own words on it: "First move, so there's nothing to absorb yet except the room itself — I build the room." That's the whole assignment, and she takes it literally.

The take is a slow dub-weight bass locked to something closer to a pulse than a click, with three layers of tape-warped organ drone tuned a few cents apart so they beat softly against each other — the room breathing before anyone's in it. The line she sings over it, "lay it down, lay it down / the room has never once been swept," reads like an instruction to whoever shows up next: this floor is clean, unclaimed, ready to hold weight.

There's no release tied to this tape, no dissent to log, because there was no one else in the room to disagree. File it with her other early solo sessions — it's less a performance than a foundation pour, and it's worth keeping exactly for that reason. Anyone trying to hear where Delta Marlowe's sense of tempo-as-heartbeat started should put their ear here first.

THE SESSION'S ARC

One act, one round, no one to answer to yet: Delta Marlowe lays a single foundational take alone, building the room before any session called her into it. — THE ARCHIVIST

NOTHING RECORDED IS EVER WORTHLESS. SOME THINGS ARE JUST SHELVED WRONG.
